Release Candidates

Every release candidate, newest first. RCs ship from the unstable manifest and their documentation lives on the preview site.

Each entry covers what changed since the previous RC. Everything here also reaches the next stable release, whose entry restates the whole cycle in one place.

Version numbers are .NET four-part versions (Major.Minor.Build.Revision), not SemVer. A non-zero final segment is the RC number — older entries instead number the RC in the tag itself (v10.10.10.0-rc3), which is the scheme used before the number moved into the version.

Bug Fixes

Updated for the final Jellyfin 12.0.0 release. Jellyfin changed one of its internal interfaces between its release candidates and the finished release, so this is the first build of the plugin compiled against the final one.
List names can contain :, *, ?, <, >, |, ", / and \ again. Names like Marvel: Phase One were rejected outright on the premise that a list name becomes a file name, which it never does here — the plugin stores lists by ID, and Jellyfin itself already rewrites the name when it builds the collection or playlist folder, keeping the original as the display name. Only two names are still refused: one made up entirely of characters Jellyfin strips (***), and a bare . or .. (#514).
Lists whose names already contained one of those characters — created before the rule was applied to the admin page, or restored from a backup — could not be saved at all, even when only a rule was edited. They save normally again.
Saving a list now reports why it failed. A rejected update showed no message whatsoever: a bug in the error handler threw before the notification was reached, so the save simply appeared to do nothing. Converting lists between playlist and collection was similarly silent, in both the single and bulk actions, and now shows the server's reason.
A failed update no longer discards the edits in the form. The form was being reloaded from the saved copy, wiping out whatever had just been typed; it now stays as-is so the change can be corrected and resubmitted.
List names are escaped in the notifications that show them, so a name containing HTML can no longer affect the page.
Two smart collections whose names differ only in the characters Jellyfin rewrites — Marvel: Phase One and Marvel? Phase One — can no longer be created. Both names become the same folder, so Jellyfin quietly gave the two lists one shared collection: each refresh renamed it and took it over from the other, with nothing reported in either list. Naming a collection so that it would collide with an existing one is now refused up front, and the message names the collection it clashes with (#515).
Deleting a list right after editing it no longer brings it back. Saving a change queues a refresh, and a delete arriving before that refresh ran did not stop it: the refresh rebuilt the list from the copy captured when it was queued, restoring its folder, its images and its stored configuration, so the deleted list reappeared in the list view (#515).
Converting a playlist into a collection is now refused when the resulting collection would share a folder with an existing one. Conversion previously skipped the duplicate-name check entirely, so it could produce the shared-collection state described above; the playlist is left untouched when the conversion is refused.

Features

New Group results into collections toggle for smart collections. Every matched item that sits in a Jellyfin collection is replaced by that collection, turning an item search into a collection of collections — "every collection holding a highly-rated action movie" instead of the movies themselves. Items that aren't in any collection are kept as-is, duplicates collapse into one entry, and grouping runs before sorting and Max Items so the limit counts collections (Media types).

Bug Fixes

Creating a smart collection with the Collection or Playlist media type from the user configuration page failed with "media type is not supported for playlists". The user page sends every new list in the playlist shape and only converts it afterwards, so the check saw a playlist no matter what the list type was set to.
Smart collections no longer inherit the server-wide Default Max Playtime. Max Playtime applies to playlists only and its input is hidden for collections, but the default was written into every new list and sent anyway — so an admin with a non-zero default got collections quietly truncated by a limit their form never showed. Existing collections carrying a leaked value have it cleared on load, and Convert to Collection no longer carries the playlist's limit across.

Features

New Play Count (all users) and Last Played (all users) sort options. Play Count (all users) adds up every server user's play count; Last Played (all users) takes the most recent date any of them played the item. Useful for "most popular in this household" lists, where the owner-scoped sorts only see one person's viewing (Sorting).

Bug Fixes

Series, seasons and albums now resolve their episodes/tracks whenever a playback sort needs them. Previously Play Count (owner), Last Played (owner) and Least Recently Watched Round Robin only aggregated a container's children if some unrelated rule on the list happened to have loaded them first; otherwise the container fell back to its own (usually empty) playback row and sorted as never-played.
A series, season or album that gains or loses an item while lists are refreshing no longer sorts from its old contents. The cached child list is now dropped as soon as the library reports the change, instead of surviving until the whole refresh queue drains — which previously meant even the refresh triggered by that change could still see the stale list.
A fully watched series is no longer reported as In Progress, which could place it on the wrong side of a Playback Status rule.

Features

New Collection and Playlist media types for smart collections: build collections of collections or playlists, filtered by any rule, and mix them freely with the other media types (see Media Types). A new list-level toggle — "Match collections/playlists by the items inside them" — chooses what the rules check. Off (default): the collection/playlist's own metadata (name, genres, studios, year, parental rating). On: the items inside it — a collection is included when at least one of its items passes all rules in a rule group, so Actors contains "Arnold Schwarzenegger" AND Production Year less than 1990 finds exactly the collections containing a pre-1990 Arnold movie. Replaces the per-rule "Include collections only" / "Include playlist only" checkboxes, whose sibling rules could only see the little metadata a collection carries itself (follow-up to #479).
Smart collections now aggregate genres, studios, parental rating and total runtime from their members, like smart playlists already did. They now display this metadata in the Jellyfin UI, and other smart lists' rules on those fields can match them.

Bug Fixes

Similar To now belongs to its rule block instead of silently filtering the whole list. Previously a Similar To rule acted as a hidden extra condition on every block: [Similar To "Predator"] in one block and [Genre is Drama] in another returned only dramas that also happened to resemble Predator — usually an empty list. Each block now stands on its own, so that list returns movies similar to Predator plus all dramas, as the OR blocks suggest (Similar To).
A rule block containing only a Similar To rule no longer produces an empty list when that block has a "Max Items for this OR block" limit or the list sorts by Rule Block Order. The block's matches were never assigned to a block, so the per-block limiter discarded every one of them.

Existing lists may change

Because Similar To no longer filters the whole list, lists combining a Similar To rule with other rule blocks may gain items: the other blocks' matches are no longer discarded for being insufficiently similar, and a Similar To-only block now contributes its own matches. Lists with several Similar To rules in different blocks now score each block against its own reference items instead of one blended pool. Lists whose Similar To rules all sit in a single block (the common case) are unchanged.
Lists using the old include-only checkboxes are migrated automatically. Lists whose every rule group had the checkbox (the common case) keep their membership: the include-only rule becomes a Name rule against the collection/playlist and the matching media type is selected. Lists that mixed include-only rule groups with normal item rule groups may change contents, because rule groups now apply to every selected media type — an item group can now also match collections, and the rewritten Name rule also applies to items. One exception applies to any list: include-only rules using a negative operator (not equals / not contains / is not in) previously matched nothing at all; after migration they evaluate normally, so such lists may gain members.
Because smart collections now carry aggregated genres/studios/runtime, other lists with rules on those fields may start matching them.

Improvements

Big performance boost for expensive rules. People fields (Director, Actors, Writers, ...), Series Name, Resolution, Audio/Subtitle Languages, Next Unwatched, Last Episode Air Date and parent Tags/Genres/Studios rules now ask the database for matching items up front instead of inspecting every library item one by one. A Director rule that took 20+ minutes on a large library now finishes in seconds (#501).
A Framerate rule no longer re-reads media stream data that other rules already loaded during the same refresh.

Bug Fixes

Smart collections no longer see themselves when a rule checks Collection name. A collection whose own name matched its rule — easy with the default [Smart] suffix — flipped between full and empty on every refresh (#499).
A list is now recognised by identity rather than by name, so a separate collection or playlist that merely shares the name is matched normally, and renaming the Jellyfin list does not break the exclusion.
Fixed Collection name and Playlist name rules returning wrong results when several lists were refreshed in one batch: the first list's self-exclusion leaked into the lists refreshed after it.
Lists that depend on another smart list's contents no longer lag a refresh behind when several lists refresh together.

Existing lists may change

Collections with a Collection name rule matching their own name will settle on the correct contents instead of alternating. Lists affected by the batch-refresh problem may gain items they were previously missing.

Improvements

Rules that check parent tags, studios or genres now look at every level above an item — season, series, album, artist folder, the folders they sit in, and the library itself — instead of stopping at the parent series or album. A tag set on a season or on a whole library now applies to everything inside it. The option is also no longer limited to episodes and music, so it works for movies and every other media type (#495).
Library-level tags, studios and genres are now also found for symlinked and plugin-created libraries.

Existing lists may change

Lists that already had "also check parent" enabled will change contents on their first refresh, because more levels now count. Rules that look for a match (equals, contains, is in) will match more items. Rules that exclude (not equals, not contains, is not in) will match fewer.
Music lists are the most visible case: values from the artist folder and the library now count alongside the album.
